You were right - it's Milkweed.
I'm guessing this is more likely memory lapse than serendipity. I did start some of these from seed that GB gave me but I have no recollection of planting this in the front garden. But, since it's the identical one that I was oohing and ahhing over at her house last year, I'm assuming that's exactly what it is.
Either way, I love it and I'm planting way more of it next year if I can remember to grab the seeds. Since this one is located in my front garden and I rarely go out to the front garden, I've yet to see any actual butterflies. Next year I'll plant them in the back so that I can see them from my kitchen window and I'll be ready when the butterflies show up!
That's a great surprise. You'll have plenty of butterflies & hopefully caterpillars too. Now you can build a whole garden around this plant with lots of crimson flowered things & orange Daylilies....sorry, I got a bit carried away, but the jewel tones of the flowers are so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGina, mine are still blooming well here and they're forming seed pods, so I won't even have to buy any new seeds for next year! We've got a teeny little Monarch caterpillar on it right now and he'd better hurry it up, because it's getting awfully late for migrating! They can't fly when the temperatures go below about 55.
ReplyDeleteI've had this in the garden for a couple of years, unfortunately no Monarchs found it... but their numbers have really diminished out here in CA... fun plant, but watch out! It self seeds and spreads like ceerrraaazzy!!
