  1. One is better than none! I've never grown them. How do you know when it's ready to harvest?

  2. That's actually a very interesting gourd.
Are they particularly difficult to grow?

  3. MMD - I have no idea! I believe I read that you should wait until the stem is dried out to harvest.

leslie - i'm really surprised there is only 1 since there are lots of blooms. Maybe I should have read up on how to hand-pollinate?

alvis - thanks! and thanks for stopping by!

catsynth - this is the only time I've ever tried to grow these. I ordered seeds from Botanical Interests, soaked them overnight then started them in a coconut fiber pellet. It took a really long time to germinate but other than that, it was easy. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Wow, that is very cool! I was just researching these and wondering if I could grow them in South Dakota. I'm guessing that if you can grow them in Chicago, then I should be fine.

  6. Hi! The loufa grows very well here in Oklahoma. Been growing them for years and never had a bad season. The vines go everywhere and prety much take over the fence, but make big yellow flowers and hefty loufas in all that direct sun.

    Best wishes,
