So, I've been sitting around for months waiting on Discovery Channel to kick off the new Planet Green station programming. All green, all day and all night. What's not to love. Well, it was sort of a let down.
The first show I watched was Mean Green Machines. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't pick up truck competitions. The entire show was 2 full size trucks trying to outshine each other. The premise was that the new big ass hybrid (I forget which one ) really does have as much power as the other big ass non-hybrid. Two words - who cares? Now don't get me wrong, I understand there is a need for these trucks if you are a farmer or for some other reason need to be hauling around loads of crap all the time, but most of the trucks I see on the road are not hauling anything but air. So, I give that show 2 green thumbs down
The other drag about Planet Green is that the commercials (or should I say infomercials) are too freakin long. Discover channel - enough the the bowflex commercials - seriously! Please get more sponsors, ASAP.
I've watched several other shows over the past few days and if I wasn't such a polite southern girl I'd rip them apart, too. Did anybody hate the skirt chasing real estate agent on Alter Eco as much as I did?
Even though I haven't enjoyed Planet Green as much as I thought I would, I'm still holding out hope until I see their new show Greensburg which airs soon. It's about a town in Kansas that was destroyed by tornados last year and they've decided to rebuild the entire city green-i-ly. I so wanna move there!
So how bout it. Have you seen any of Planet Green's new programming? What did you think?
Gotta truck, love it and I'm not a farmer. Don't really haul alot around in it either. Lots of my friends green or not appreciate my non-green truck when it's moving time. Sry, missed the show but I don't have cable so I can't really keep with the latest in "green" channels.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya about the trucks. No problemo if you need a truck in your life, but many of us don't. I think we should all go to small electric cars that only go 45 miles an hour. So we slow down.... that would be a GOOD thing.

ladies and gentlemen, meet Jonna, my best friend who is a vegetarian tree hugger (she totally has save the seals buttons. I'm not making this up!) who drives one of those big ass non-hybrid trucks I was ranting about - YIKES! In her defense, ummmmm, I have no defense for her. Jonna - you know damn well you don't need that thing!

I'm keeping the truck. I do still have the right to own my vehicle of choice don't I?...For a while anyway.
ReplyDeleteWe have a small pick-up truck, but its the only vehicle in our household so ... at least we're not driving two cars around.. um , yeah. LOL! The truck comes in very handy more often than you'd think. But, yeah, I wish we had a SmartCar or something for those times when we don't need to haul stuff.

ReplyDeleteThe premise of the Planet Green channel is to show the average American that they can do something to help the planet without being a "fanatic". Seeing how SUV/Truck's are the largest selling market in America it makes sense to have a show like that.

Wish I had the station so I could watch the Greensburg show. I used to live in Wichita and drove through there often. They sport the deepest hand-dug well and a large meteorite! I have one pic of some of the devestation from a trip I took through there last year.

It was so sad to see the town mostly gone. I was amazed to read about the "greening" of the town. Not exactly my first thought of a western Kansas town. It's great to see.
ps - I just paid 43 bucks to fill my Saturn's 10 gallon tank (which gets 30 mpg). Glad I don't have a truck to fill. But if I had room and the money I would probably have a small truck for transporting tools, furniture, etc.. and a hybrid for getting places the train won't take me.
I'm not surprised that the Discovery channel is trying to cash in on the "green" movement. Lots of businesses and the media want to act like they are REALLY concerned about the planet etc. etc. It's the "in" thing now and you will be seeing all kinds of craptastic programing pretending concern. I wouldn't even bother with stuff like that - it's just a waste of your time. They only want your money (through those bowflex commercials!).
