Columbine: The Witch Flower

If I was a witch (a wicked one) and I had a garden, it would be filled with all kinds of columbine. For some reason this flower always makes me think about witches. Does that make me crazy? I mean look at those spiky petals. Don't you think they look kinda evil and spooky?

Can you think of any other spooky flowers? Or does anybody have a witch garden?

  1. I must be the Wicked Witch of the West because I have so many Columbines & most of them are dark purple. To me, witchy flowers are things like Monkshood (which I also grow), Nightshade, & Poppies. (Obvious connotations.) For witchy-looking flowers, I think Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) & Asarum fit the bill.

  3. There used to be a "goth garden" website, before blogs... that might have some interesting ideas on a witch garden in it.

The columbines, though, they always reminded me of butterflies. I guess it's the long spurs, which look like the long tail wings of some butterflies?

  4. This flower does not look spooky and wicked, but beautiful and delicate but able to protect itself, strong. The name witch should not conjure spooky images. We are at one with nature. We respect her. We admire her beauty and strength. You see spooky and wicked. I see beauty and strength. There is nothing wrong with your opinion, because isn't that what nature is about. Opposites. Ugly and beauty. Wicked and good. Male and female. Black and white. And ultimately, good and evil. Not all witches are evil. Please, don't pile us all in one pile. There are evil witches. But most of us are just misunderstood by people who don't know the true meaning of being a witch.

  5. Hearing you say that you love the witch flower because it looks evil and wicked and reminds you of witches shows that you know nothing of what a true witch is. I suggest that you not comment on things that you know nothing about. It could make you look ignorant. Personally, I prefer the purple variety of this flower.
