What The Heck Is This?: Restaurant Edition

Pie Guy stumbled on a restaurant that was getting rid of their plants and he talked them into giving him some. He brought back one bag for me and one bag for Garden Buddy. Thanks, Pie Guy! So what the heck are these things please? Will they live in my house? Do they need a lot of water or a little of water?

They are very pretty, yes?

  1. They ARE very pretty, Gina. (Please don't tell me the restaurant was going to put in artificial plants instead....)
The brightly coloured foliage plant is a croton, (Codiaeum variegatum). I haven't had one for years, but I seem to recall that they like moisture, so put the plant in a saucer with wet pebbles, and mist it regularly, and don't let the soil dry out. That's about all I can offer, but I'm sure there are websites galore.
the flowering plant appears to be some sort of fuchsia, of which there are a gazillion. I've never tried growing them indoors, but I KNOW someone will help with that, too.
    Great score for Pie Guy!

  2. Pie Guy is well-trained. Croton and fuschia, I agree with Jodi, she gave some good advice and you got some free plants. What a great day!

  3. Good job, Pie Guy!!

I have a croton like that and I've successfully overwintered it. I thought it was going to be a croaked croton before spring got here, but it survived me and once I got it outside, it perked right up and did GREAT! It's back inside for the winter and I'll try to do better this winter. It does like moisture, as Jodi said. Misting it will make it happy!

That fuschia bloom looks like the cape fuschia I just bought when shopping in Cleveland with Kim. Not sure about growing it as a houseplant. It's new for me, too, and mine is supposed to be winter hardy so it's in the ground. But I don't know if the one you have is that kind.

  4. It's a Thalia fuschia, I think.
