I'd Rather Be Gardening, Or Blogging About Gardening

My day job is standing in the way of gardening and garden blogging and I'm pissed off about it. Ever since I got this new job I've been working later than usual and I'm back to being obsessed about work, even when I'm at home.

Today was a typical day. I worked until almost 7:30 - by the time I get home I can't even see the garden, let alone work in it. I haven't picked a single tomato this week so I'm assuming they are rotting on the vine. Not only that, but I'm having a really hard time keeping up with all the blogs I love to read as well as writing on my own blog. Gardening Bloggers - I MISS YOU!

The weekends are mostly devoted to doing crap that simply prepares me to work my ass of the next week - laundry, grocery shopping, blah blah blah. This sucks! I need a gardening vacation...
On a positive note, I'm going to the bulb sale at the Botanical Garden with GB this weekend. YAY!

If anybody has any suggestions on how I can blow off work to do some gardening without getting fired, please email me immediately! If by some wild chance my boss is reading this blog - I NEED A FREAKIN VACATION! I'M STRESSED OUT AND MY PLANTS NEED ME DAMMIT!

  1. Im with you! My job has completely stopped my finishing of a cold frame for this winter. I have about 5 things I wanted to plant before it gets too cold including garlic and I just don't know when I'll get to it all!

  2. I hope that there's some way you can cut back on your work hours. It's irritating when you want to be out in the garden and can't be.

Maybe a mental health gardening day is in order. The work won't go anywhere just for one day! I doubt your boss would be happy at this suggestion, but please don't get stressed out. We need you in the garden blogsphere!!

  3. What time do you start work? I try to start work at 7 AM, so I can leave by 5 PM. Balance, balance, balance. You have to spend some time looking for it. Your job is new to you now, you'll settle in to it, and find that balance again, or go talk to your boss.

    Good luck!

  4. Do you have any vacation days left? That's what I use when I want to do lots of gardening - or - you could have the "twenty four hour flu"!!! I've heard some people do that . . .

  5. From that picture you posted, you are looking quite sick! Work always gets in the way doesn't it seem? Carol gave sage advice and she is probably right, you will settle in and find the balance but maybe you could force the balance starting two days a week. Get out of that office on time.

  6. Gina,

Working full time and trying to garden as well is not easy, as you know , especially as the days grow shorter.

I can't imagine working until 7:30 and still have the energy to garden !

I hope that things will settle down for you at work so you can have more time to relax and do the things you want to.

I tried to leave you a comment saying I'll be trying to find a few minutes to read up on your blog this weekend but it says I need to be logged in to leave a comment. HELP! Anyway, Welcome! And thanks for stopping by!

  8. I feel for you, Gina. I work from home as a fulltime writer, and sometimes that fulltime stretches into evenings, weekends, etc...but then I can declare a mental health day--or in my case even an hour or two--to go outside and putter, or write in my blog, or read the blogs I love. It's different for those who are tied to a 9-5 (or in Carol's case, 7-5???? What kind of evil hours are THOSE!? What happened to the 40 hour work week???)

The thing about gardening is not to panic. Stuff gets done, and remember, you do it for your pleasure and relaxation, not to get more stressed. Maybe you can hire someone to come and clean your house for a couple of hours a week, or get other family members to help? My longsuffering spouse cooks, cleans house, does laundry, also mowing, whippersnipping and edging, helps with the barn chores, plus works parttime on his woodlot. I'd be lost without him--well, the house would be kneedeep in cathair! :-)

Look after yourself, though; without good health, nothing else is possible. I know this firsthand because I'm having some health difficulties and it's making me crazy! (or perhaps that should read craziER?)

  9. It's a pisser, isn't it? Once the clocks go back, you can't even get a dose of sanity in the garden after work.

  10. I know what you mean, Gina. When I have weeks like that, I try to find a tiny project that I can do in 15 minutes or so, something like dividing a clump of daylilies or moving one perennial--whether it needs to be moved or not--just to get some dirt under my fingernails. I'm still behind on my real projects, but it puts me back in touch with my garden and all the souls that inhabit it. Good Luck!

  11. Sometimes, especially when it's tough at work, whatever the time is when i'm back home, I go gardening. Just doing something little, but what's most important, to get some smell of soil and fresh air :) it is more difficult when days are getting shorter. in this days, just try to get patient and wait until it will be over soon :)

  12. I hear ya! Have you noticed all the comments I'm making, I'm making my way slowly through all the blogs I haven't read while on "sabatical" -- it's tough but if you miss any of my great posts, I'll forgive you.

  13. Seriously, Gina, it's all about adding garden lighting. ;) I save all of my front-yard puttering for after sunset because I can do most of it by porchlight. lol.

  14. I'm definitely hearing you. I know that work is about to move into a busy period and I'm not looking forward to it.

I'm also a fan of garden lighting...because I have to water after 7pm (water restrictions).

    Hang in there.
