Weekend Warriors: Pergola Countdown

The site of the future pergola

Next weekend a beautiful pergola will be built here by me, GB and Pie Guy.

We don't have any proper plans and none of us have ever done anything like this before. That's just how we roll!

The 4x4 posts will be placed 12 feet apart in a square over to the left near the grass. The top beams will extend over the supports by 2 feet on each side. I haven't decided for sure but I think the beams will be placed so that they are perpendicular to the fence boards.

What is this 2008: Does anybody know what the heck this is? There are 3 of them popping up in the flower bed by the garage and I have no clue what it is but it looks kinda cool.

  1. this is a guess, but could it be an asiatic lily?

  2. Yes, that is an Asiatic lily. Very cool - it'll be interesting to see what color it will be.

Wow! You guys are really brave to tackle such a big project! I'm going to be checking in to see how it's going. I think it's great how quickly you've been moving with all your big projects.

  4. Don't listen to me, but when I saw it I thought it was a Tall Phlox. Its probably a lily though.. I dunno what i'm talking about half the time lol! Yay pergola! I'm so impressed that you guys are gonna put it up yourselves.

  5. Looks very much like a lily to me, Gina. And I mean a proper lily, ie from the lilium family, not a ditch lily or something like that. Lucky you! If you like it, email me in the autumn and I'll mail you some seeds for BIG lilies!

  6. If you have any rabbits, wrap that plant in chickenwire or spray repellent on it. Rabbits (& sometimes squirrels) like to take a bite out of the middle of a Lily stalk.
The pergola sounds great - I can't wait to see photos of the finished project.

  7. Wow, that would be a recipe for my husband and I to kill each other. And God help anyone who tries to help us, they'd just get caught in the crossfire. Good luck and I can't wait to see it!
