Keeping Up With My (garden blogging) Friends

From time to time I'll run across a garden blog entry on one of my regular reads that talks about how the blogger discovers how people are finding their blog. I've always been too embarrassed to say that I have no clue how to do this. Is it magic?

Because I'm just wandering around the web doing absolutely nothing productive this morning, I decided to google my blog. What I found was that some other bloggers have mentioned me in posts and I didn't even know it. I feel bad! How rude of me not to pop over and at least say hello. But I plead ignorance! I swear I didn't know!

I try really hard to keep up with all my blog reading but with the invention of Blotanical, it's almost impossible for me to read every single blog that I'd like to. Unless I can figure out a way to get paid for sitting on my ass reading gardening blogs, I have to prioritize. Organization is NOT my strong point (shocking, I know) and although it was very helpful when Carol told me about google reader, I still feel like there must be something more I can do.

I really do appreciate anybody who takes the time to read my blog. And I really do feel extremely special when somebody (gasp) mentions me on their blog. I need to find a way to keep up with this so I can thank them properly. Saying "Thank You" is one of the core values in Southern Hospitality (yes, I just made that up but it's my blog!) and I'm falling down on the job.

See, just the fact that I've mentioned Carol's name means she'll stop by and say "thanks for the plug, gina." How do you do it, Carol? Are you magic?

  1. Hi Gina,

There's a site out there that aggregates things about blogs - like your posts and how many people have mentioned you in their blogs. You already have a page, check it out.

Also, if you want to know who's visiting your blog on a daily basis, is a good tool. You basically set up your site for free there, they give you a code which you paste into your blog's layout (it's invisible), and you log in and can see lots of info about your visitors.

    Happy Blogging!

  2. Hi Gina- I found your blog through the "My Chicago Garden" blog (who I found via a google search for "chicago" and "garden" And, despite the insane amount of things we seem to have in common, I promise I'm not stalking you LOL!!

  3. You did NOT make that up about saying thank you being a core value of Southern hospitality, girl. I've gotten bopped on the head many times for not doing it.

Maybe now you can mend your errant ways : )

  4. You really should get stat counter, I have it, although I don't check it very often. But it is fun to see how many have visited my blog.

  5. Gina: You made me laugh and if you do figure out how to get paid for sitting on your ass reading gardening blogs you had better share it with the rest of us! I know, sometimes you just don't know. I say no worries! Have fun with the blog and just keep gardening!

  6. Hi, Gina. Thanks for the link! I am magic, that's it.

Actually, I'm real, several bloggers met me in Austin last weekend. I use primarily Technorati to find out who is linking to me, and had your post not shown up in my feedreader, I would have found your links through Technorati.

As more gardeners start blogging, it is hard to keep up!

  7. Reading blogs is what you do when you can't be out in the garden. Don't sweat not being able to keep up. Just pop in every once in a while & leave a comment (however short & unpithy). And yes, Carol is real, she wears green, but no, she doesn't carry a hoe with her at all times.

  8. Blotanical just feeds my blog reading addiction.
I think I found your site way before I joined blotanical. Possibly I linked to a comment you made.

  9. Heather's GardenApril 10, 2008 at 6:36 PM

Gina, I use Typepad and the subscription that I chose (darned if I can remember how much I paid, but it was less than $75 for the whole year) includes the ability to see some stats of who's visiting my blog. I get a lot of visitors from your post referencing the bastard garden. I can see what they searched for on Google -- would you believe that I'm #2 if you google heather garden? I think they are a lot of disappointed heather plant fans out there. I don't get IP addresses or anything though, so I can't really tell who's looking, just where they're coming from if they use a link.

  10. Yeah, typepad has that cool ability, but blogger doesn't. If people leave a comment then I go visit their blog, otherwise, I don't know either. And I use netvibes as my Feed so I put all the blogs I want to read in there and that's how I keep up -- although I too don't have the time to read all the blogs I want to read. I can't remember how I found you?
