So, I pulled up all the dead Cantaloupe vines along with the no-so-dead-but-tastes-like-crap Watermelon and threw it out. The picture below is my attempt to piece together the sod that I removed from the new gardens in the front. For some reason this reminds me of that scene from the movie The Silence of the Lambs where the guy had sown together sections of skin from all his victims. YIKES! 
Yes, I've been wasting lots of water, watering this strip of grass like crazy. I have no clue what I'm doing, but I figured it was worth a shot.
I still have tomatoes, jalapenos, bell peppers, basil and oregano left but as I'll try to transplant sod as I go as long as it looks alive.
I wonder what happened to the cantaloupe. I had to smile when I saw the lawn back where the cantaloupe had been.

Oh, I hate it when stuff like this happens! Did you get any cantaloupes from it, or did it die off before you got any?

It could have been a virus, but I'm thinking that they've run their course. It's the end of September and they should be pretty much done.

ReplyDeletecolleen - i did get several cantaloupes before they died. They were the best cantaloupes i've ever tasted!
alyssa - maybe it was a virus. nothing else was really effected so who knows. i dont know what i expected for things to do when they are "done" but this was not it. if this transplanting sod works, i am thinking i'll do this all over my backyard in the spots where i killed the grass by leaving the debris from the new beds on it too long.

ReplyDeleteMy melons (both canteloupe and watermelon) did the same thing this year, even before yours did. We got a few, which were delicious, but I wanted MORE!
