Buried "Treasures"

When I was cleaning the auger from the 2 man post hole digger before I returned it, I found this spoon wrapped around it. While this is much more interesting than digging up a plastic bag (they probably last as long as this spoon, huh?) it did make the whole biodegradable thing hit home with me. I'm going to try to be more careful about leaving stuff laying around outside because if I don't, you never know who might be digging up my crap decades from now.

I'm interested in seeing what this spoon looks like without all this dirt on it but I tried unsuccessfully to clean it. I can't imagine how many years of grime this must be. I was thinking I should hang or mount it somewhere on the new pergola as a reminder of all our hard work.

  1. I love finding wierd stuff in the yard and wondering where they came from. At one house I found a small red (old) bowl when I was cleaning up brush.

  2. When I augered for my deck, we found bits and pieces of all sorts of metal, glass, plastic and ceramic items. Apparently, for the 100 years before the house was built (the house is 111), before regular garbage collection, people dumped stuff in their yards - especially when the downtown area of Buffalo I'm in was farmland on the outskirts of town.

Maybe you've tapped into a ancient vein of garbage. An archeological anthropologist's dream.

  3. Good post; I found a horseshoe, keep digging you might find more spoons! Well, keep it, it might become a new style, very contemporary!

  4. I smile every time I stop by your blog and see your profile. Being from Alabama, I can identify with the annoying southern accent. Have you succeeded in getting rid of it yet? Mine isn't too bad, but even when I lived in Alabama, people would say, "you ain't from 'round here are you?"
Thankfully I never did have it too bad... but my family...well, we won't go there.

Anyway, now to your post, before we got our sod, we were picking up rocks and found what looked to be an arrowhead and pieces of a clay pot. That was exciting!

  5. christine - i love it too as long as it's not old grocery bags (ive found a bunch of those). What did you do with your old red bowl?

jim - that's very cool! how'd you learn that about your property? "Ancient vein of garbage" - i like the sound of that! The spoon I found has "Annette" on it. I don't really think it's that old. When were spoons created?

titania - there will be no more digging at that depth at my house for a long time!

  6. robin - it's funny that you mention my accent because we were just talking about it in my class tonight. my classmates have decided that when i start talking about my family, my southern accent really gets strong. I think what happens is that, when I start talking faster, I lose "control" of it. Now im totally screwed up because my mother says I talk like a "yankee" and here in chicago everybody still says i have a southern accent. arrowheads? very cool!

  7. What a neat little treasure. I think hanging it in the pergola would be a nice reminder of all the hard work you've done.

We filled boxes and boxes with broken wine and liquor bottles that the previous owner had thrown in the woods! She was a widow with a bit of a "problem" and we were told that she didn't want the garbage men to know how much she drank. So, she tossed the bottles under trees and onto a stone fence! For quite a while it was dangerous in those areas!!

I agree, I wouldn't want someone digging up my junk in the future and commenting about it on the internet! Funny post!!

  8. Someone who lived in our ranch must've had a son or a grandson. I've unearthed an old army man, a Hot Wheels car and a Hot Wheels Club badge.

Maybe your spoon was used in a pinch by a former gardener. How cool would it be that a new gardener found it?

  9. Love the thrill of digging and finding stuff. So far, I've just found rocks, one was a fossil. Haven't found any spoons or other household utensils. Have you read my blog post about burying a time capsule in your garden? You ought to do that! Leave something for someone else to dig up someday.
